What if a simple drawing could reveal thoughts and emotions that words cannot express?
Children, and adults alike, often communicate through colours, symbols and imagery without even realising it. The subconscious mind has its own unique language, and learning to recognise these patterns can provide valuable insight into emotions, experiences and personal growth.
An example of an interpretation in my book is shared below. This real-life artwork demonstrates how elements such as colour, placement, numbers and symbols can come together to reveal a deeper emotional story. While every drawing is unique and should always be interpreted within the context of the individual, this example offers a glimpse into the fascinating language of the subconscious explored throughout Hidden Messages: How to Interpret Children’s and Adults’ Subconscious Art.
This artwork was created by a young child.
At first glance, it may seem to just be a picture of a rainy day.
Notice the three dark grey rain clouds above (representing, grief, sadness, depression). These can be suppressed emotions. There are three clouds (a need to express) but there are also three sisters in this family, is she feeling their emotions too.
On the left side of the drawing (immediate past) this child is sheltering under the umbrella (protecting her emotions and feelings). The rain can represent her inner tears that need to be released.
She has drawn herself in grey (sadness, grief) but she has a pink face (need for nurturing and love).
Notice the colour of the umbrella, which is dark red (symbolizing anger and resentment) that she may be holding within herself.
The tree (her personal growth) is adorned with numerous green leaves, suggesting some growth within the family dynamic; however the thin trunk of the tree can represent (lack of structure and support). She needs to experience more stability, support and grounding.
At the bottom of the picture, there are 14 tulips, which add up to 5 (freedom, new life, growth and balance).
Flowers represent the beauty within her and tulips also represent (renewal and better times head).
As her parents are separated, she needs an avenue to express her inner emotions and feelings of sadness whilst working towards a solid foundation and further growth within the family structure and her place within it.
